EXPLANATION OF METHODOLOGY

  • Samples of commercially available military uniforms from the United States, United Kingdom, France and Greece were selected to be part of the NYCO vs Poly/Cotton test.
  • This testing used accepted industry standards by measuring colorfastness and abrasion in a lab environment to determine whether a fabric had reached a point of failure. Test results indicated that both colorfastness and abrasion were responsible for the overwhelming majority of uniform failures.
  • Each type of fabric used in the test was washed in increments of 10 washes for up to a total of 100 washes.
  • To measure colorfastness, the samples were washed and tested on a greyscale with any reading below 3.5 deemed a failure.
  • To measure abrasion, samples were weighed after washes in accordance with an accelerated Martindale Abrasion test to gauge fabric mass loss and a 15% loss of original sample mass was defined as failure.
  • The NYCO vs PolyCotton calculator weights colorfastness results at 70% while abrasion results are at 30%.
  • The 70/30 split takes into account the physical appearance factor (PAF) which is the estimated time in which physical appearance becomes unacceptable prior to absolute failure.
